Anyone in the world

In Nigeria, despite all the skirmishes, we really do not hate one another. Almost everyone has a neighbour who is from a tribe or ethnic group different from his. We have all bought things today or yesterday without asking the origin of the seller; and for the most part, the seller was not our tribe or ethnic orientation.

It is just a "framing" by the bad elements in our society, to make way for their evil intentions. When they succeed with the framing, while the unfortunate victims fight, they plunder the commonwealth.

Let us be properly guided.

As we gradually approach the end of the first semester with the examination timetable out. it is really been one hundred and sixty (160) days of changing of perceptions, expectations, beliefs, norms and some new values are better prioritized.

It has opened a new way at looking at human behavior, career and overcoming doubts that gradually sneaks into our thoughts and makes us less confident in our dreams and passions. New acquaintances have been made , total strangers four months ago are becoming friends that make us laugh and  learn.

Financial accounting is about the financial statements organizations prepare for external users, such as those who supply them goods on credit, banks and other financial institutions who loan them money, investors who are interested in buying their shares, the government who they are to pay taxes to. These outsiders need information about the companies to know how they will be able to pay their debts or loans, if investing them will yield good returns and if they are paying adequate tax.

At the end of the financial year, companies will produce four financial statements and notes to the account which provides more detailed information to the financial statements. The Four financial statements are the Statement of Profit or Loss (also known as the Income Statement), the Statement of Financial Position (also known as the Balance Sheet), the Statement of Shareholders Equity, and the Statement of Cash Flow.

The balance sheet reports a company’s financial position - the company’s assets, liabilities and owner's equity at a point in time. The Income Statement reports on a company’s performance over a period of time and lists amounts for revenues and expenses - Revenues less expenses yield the bottom-line net income amount. The Statement of Stockholders’ reports on changes in key types of equity over a period of time. And the Statement of Cash Flows reports the change - either an increase or a decrease-  in a company’s cash balance over a period of time.

The truth is that Covid-19 is here to stay, and the ripple effect, as we have all seen, has resulted in many workers losing their jobs and others having their salaries reduced. If I may ask a query, before the pandemic, who can confidently declare that their jobs will remain intact during this period? If you're not sure, you can put yourself in a better place to get hired or evolve.

What does it take to get hired?

Getting hired entails more than just sending or dropping your resume; you can be hired on the basis of a recommendation or by following the hiring process. It involves sounding and displaying technical competence, having a clear understanding and visible positive behavioral trait, and having a recommendable digital and physical footprint in order to get employed.

So yes, the movie 24 hours right?  But no, not the movie at all. That isn't what my blog is about. My LBS 1st-semester final examination lasted 24hrs. Let me borrow the commonly used Nigerian slang these days, 'E shock you?' Well, maybe it sounded convenient at first and did not 'shock me' when at first the timetable was fixed. At least I would have enough time to put together an all-inclusive Background, define the Decision Statement/Problem/Question depending on whichever the case demanded.

Enough time to 'shine my eyes', dig well into the case, and light up my beacon of guide which is the Objective(s) of that decision, tactically identifying the Decision Alternative(s), itemizing Criteria (Criterion), and cautiously sieving the noise from the actual points while analyzing the Alternative(s) against the Criterion(Criteria).

The whole essence of this process is to help the protagonist either resolve a business problem and/or make a critical business decision. Therefore, my proffered decision/recommendation has to be one that optimizes the criteria and fulfills the objective. Finally, develop a best-fit action plan.

So finally the fixed day came and I beheld first the examination guide and then the 'Almighty Examination Case Study'. For the first time I temporarily forgot the full meaning of ABP, 'Another Business Problem?', NO. 'All Believers Program?' NO. 'Abnormal Blood Pressure?' NO, of course not. I gave up and concentrated on the case before me. And back to the stipulated time frame to solve the case, 24hrs, remember? When at 4am the next day, my classmates were all wide awake encouraging one another on the group platform, reality dawned on me that all the other cases we've been solving in the class had been plain sailing.

And so again I ask, 'E shock you?'. So when are they coming up with the slang, 'E electrocute you?' Time to pay up for the accrued sleep. Waking up to engage the second Semester. All glory to God.

Our biases are like traps in decision making, and the irony about them is that since they are ours, it paints a picture of someone working against himself. The good news however is that we can outsmart them.

What makes our biases such a difficult problem is that they come from our intuition which helps us in our decision making. So to know if our intuition is actually helping us make good decisions or jeopardizing our objectivity, we must test our gut feelings.

According to Jack B Soll, et al 2015, we are more vulnerable to biases when we are fatigued, stressed and multitasking. And one solution they suggest is to delegate and fight bias at the organizational level, using choice architecture to modify the environment in which decisions are made.

However, when delegation is inappropriate for the problem, they suggest understanding where the biases are coming from - which is usually an excessive reliance on intuition and defective reasoning. When we understand where the biases are coming from, we should de-biase our decisions by broadening our perspectives on three fronts: how we think about the future, how we think about objectives and how we think about options.

                Anyone in the world

Hello everyone, and Happy worker's day to each and everyone. It has been 24hours of no sleep as a result of the ABP(Analysis of Business Problems) exams which ran from 9am, Saturday Morning. So, pardon me because I still feel  a little light headed. I am however not here to discuss ABP, but a phase of great concern for me and this nation.

You flip through the various forms of news media, print, broadcast, outdoor, internet and you cannot help but notice the alarming levels of Insecurity in the country. Everyone, from doctors, lawyers and even religious leaders have all come out to express deep concerns, but the bigger picture is the rather deafening silence of the President. It is purported that his continued silence, has fueled the unabated destruction of life's and property.

It is evident that the required leadership, to steer the country is not living up to its responsibility. I am certain, we have all in one way or the other engaged on the topic of Leadership and who a good leader is, but permit me to share extracts of Steve Goodier's write up on Four traits of a good leader.

"Much has been written and taught about leadership, but I find that at

least four traits are common in all people of authority who
effectively elicit cooperation and respect from those who look up to
them. Whether you are a parent, whether you find yourself in the
workplace, sitting on a volunteer committee or teaching some-one a
new skill, these traits will help you effectively guide those who
                would seek to follow.
                These good leaders are...
Listeners. They take time to listen to the suggestions and concerns
of those they endeavor to lead.

Encouragers. They don't try to do it all themselves. Neither do they
motivate by force or guilt. They encourage others and help bring out
                their best.
Assertive. They say what needs to be said without being unkind. They
tell the truth as they see it, openly and frankly.
Decisive. They know what needs to be done and they make timely, even
difficult, decisions when necessary. But they can also take charge
without running over the people in their lives.

                In short, good leaders L-E-A-D!
It's said that the trouble with being a leader today is that you
can't be sure whether people are following you or chasing you. But
those who will develop these four traits are sure to find that their
authority will be valued and respected.

I do hope, the country's leadership throw in the tools and works to stem the insecurity and failings of this nation.
From me, it is love and light always. Happy holidays!
                Mr. Lads
