Anyone in the world

‘Hey! I don’t need this bridge no more, so who cares if it goes up in blazes!’ You say…

But not too fast, who says never say never, huh!

Granted, we cannot say ‘yes’ to everyone and everything at the same time – it’s why there is such a thing as opportunity cost in economics. But then, we can say ‘no’ without making enemies – it’s why there is such a thing called emotional intelligence.

At a point in time, I had two job opportunities – both great opportunities by the way – a dream come true for most. But here’s the snag, I couldn’t take up both opportunities at the same time; I had to disappoint one organisation. Here was my dilemma – how to say ‘no’ without making enemies.

Of course, I could just say ‘no’ and move on. But because I knew I may be needing the rejected one later in life, I had to be creative about how I said the ‘no’ so it did not become a personal vendetta.

The thing is, in this thing called life, you often cannot get divorced from having a roller coaster ride or coming back full circle even at the most inopportune times. Hence, wisdom is key.

I kid you not, I spent a number of sleepless nights ruminating on how to say this ‘no’ even engaging with about three very senior persons in the know and of course my personal ‘yard’ people on how to go about it.

In the end, the ‘no’ was said – feelings were hurt and maybe one or two silent enemies made. But then, I tried to say the ‘no’ in such a way that there were very viable reasons behind the ‘no’ which could not be faulted. I also retained many of my senior friends in the process.

Kinda reminds me of when I need to say ‘no’ to le hubs. I mean I could very easily tell him to go to hell, but then ‘who e epp’ when he gets pissed? So I often think of how to couch my ‘no’ in a way that doesn’t alienate him – which in turn also impresses on him the manner in which to tell me ‘no’ in a respectful way.

You see in this life, choose your battles; don’t burn bridges if you can help it. Emotional intelligence is key and wisdom is supreme!

Cheerio,

Adefolake

According to Pamela Peterson Drake, There are six aspects of operating performance and financial condition we can evaluate from financial ratios:

    1. A Liquidity Ratio provides information on a company's ability to meet its short term, immediate obligations.

     2. A Profitability Ratio provides information on the amount of income from each dollar of sales.

    3. An Activity Ratio relates information on a company's ability to manage its resources (that is, its assets) efficiently.

    4. A Financial Leverage Ratio provides information on the degree of a company's fixed financing obligations and its ability to satisfy these financing obligations.

    5. A Shareholder's Ratio describes the company's financial condition in terms of amounts per share of stock.

    6. A Return On Investment Ratio provides information on the amount of profit, relative to the assets employed to produce that profit.

    You are welcome.

Communication is the manager's superpower because it's how she collaborates with and influences others. Therefore, every part of communication requires careful thought. In addition to carefully crafting her message, the manager also needs to put a lot of thought into the channel to use. She must consider if the message is most suited for email, a telephone or face to face presentation.

Here are some questions to consider when selecting a channel:

      • Here are questions that can assist you in selecting a channel:

      • Which channel is best for my purpose?

      • Which channel is best for my audience?

      • Which channel is best for conveying information or making an argument?

      • Which channel is best for making an emotional impact on my audience?

      • Which channel is best for me?

Hey People, exams are offer, and before we could say, OH MY! Here we are on the second semester of LBS class. It is synonymous with the saying, ' that he further you go, the more you know". We started off the second semester with a lot of technical but interesting courses, I however will focus on one for today, THE ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT OF BUSINESS 1.

The outline was scary, yet so interesting as it bothered on the micro and macro economy of a country, whilst the microeconomics deals with the decision level of household and firms level, the macro elements spoke to the determination of the broad based economics; Inflation, unemployment, monetary and fiscal policies.

The course speaks to a lot of happenings around the world, the economy situation, as well as the general principles of economic terms.

Economics in itself, is a social science that deals with satisfaction of needs and wants of people, organisations, society and government. I have a mild background to economics, but was glad to hear opportunity cost as a forgone alternative.

The highlight of the day was trying to unbundle the terror facing Nigeria, this really struck me as I have been touching on "which way Nigeria" in recent write-ups.

We have another class tomorrow, where this will be unveiled, though my thoughts are aligned with our constitution being the problem, but let us wait and see. Trust that, I  cannot wait to let you in on this, so keep it locked down here,

Till next time, it is love and light always.

          Anyone in the world

I’m glad I can laugh and blog about this now, ‘cos it wasn’t even funny at the time.

This is how the story goes…

After the fanfare of the wedding ceremonies, I was eager to get out of the pretty but uncomfortable gown while hubz was having a field day catching up with his hommies. Time finally came to get out of my wedding gown and I packed it away. After all, I won’t be wearing it again. In fact, the thought of spending so much on a gown to be worn for just a few hours and never again, tempted me to want to rent a gown to use. But the snag was, I was sentimental about wanting a new gown ‘cos well, I’m new too. Story for another day. Anyways, Mr. O. – le hubz, gave me the funds to buy the gown. My champ🥰

Time to check out from the hotel to our place came and my darling aburo (meaning younger sibling) came around to help stow away heavy load so we could travel light. Yea, we had to ‘bolt’ our way home ‘cos our car chose that wedding period to misbehave. Story for another day too.

So gown packed, I handed the gown to my aburo to keep with my parents and bolted with Mr. O. to our home without any thought. I had initially wanted to pick up the gown at my parents’ after our church thanksgiving a few days later to dry-clean and stow away but then I thought…what’s the hurry? There kuku still wasn’t any private car of ours to use.

Thanksgiving came. We went to my parents’ to greet them and headed back to our place. I didn’t even bother to check on my darling wedding gown while there.

One month down the line, car had finally gotten repaired – gulped a very tidy sum🙄 – I went to my parents’ to pack my wedding gown and other personal effects. I didn’t find the gown in my room. No worries, I thought; it must be in my former room or aburo’s room. Surprise! checked there. Nowhere to be found. We checked all the nooks and crannies in the house. No show. I began to wonder whether the gown was so small – like me – as to be easily non-conspicuous.

No jokes, it started getting not funny. ‘Cos you see, we live in a superstitious society where the common belief is that people wish to do you bad at iconic events like wedding days – especially if they can lay hold of the groom’s traditional wedding cap or the bride’s wedding gown. Sigh. I’m generally not a careless person, so this was a bit huge. How could I have been so absent minded as to not notice my wedding gown was missing for one whole month. No, it had nothing to do with the starry eyedness of wedding night paroles. There was kuku none in my case ‘cos monthly hormones had a mind of their own. Another story for another day – maybe.

At this point, my mum was getting a bit worried – cos superstitions. My aburo was getting a bit worried ‘cos the gown was left in their care. Mr. O was not particularly worried ‘cos we can tackle any superstitions spiritually. For him, it was more of smh that I could get so carried away with the festivities as to not pay attention to the little details of my wedding gown whereabouts. Couldn’t even roll my eyes that sebi I wanted to pick the gown a few days after the ceremonies but the steer was why the rush? It was our problem and we had to solve it.

Then we think to ourselves, ‘could we have left the wedding gown in the hotel?‘ ‘It’s not possible’ – we say. We saw the gown when my aburo kept it in the car that day. But for whatever it’s worth, my aburo calls the hotel and voila! There the gown was, sitting in its majestic glory for one month. Apparently, while arranging the car on our checkout day, the wedding gown had been placed on the floor beside the car and forgotten there. The hotel staff, took it in and kept in a safe place. Don’t even ask me how it is that the hotel didn’t think to call. Instead the issue, is how could I not have fathomed, for a whole one month that my wedding gown was not on my bed in my parents’ house.

Anyway, I’m glad the wedding gown was found in one piece. At least one less prayer point to have to kabash about not letting wicked village people get hands on the wedding gown and do us dirty.

The wedding gown’s now dry-cleaned and sitting pretty, without a care in the world.

          Cheers,

          Adefolake

According to Pamela Peterson Drake, as a manager, you may want to reward employees based on their performance. How do you know how well they have done? How can you determine what departments or divisions have performed well? As a lender, how do decide the borrower will be able to pay back as promised? As a manager of a corporation how do you know when existing capacity will be exceeded and enlarged capacity will be needed? As an investor, how do you predict how well the securities of one company will perform relative to that of another? How can you tell whether one security is riskier than another? We can address all of these questions through financial analysis.

While still trying to understand and figure out how to interpret a financial statement data, I also realized  that indeed when analyzing a financial statement, the financial analyst must select just the relevant information, analyze it, and interpret the analysis, enabling judgments on the current and future financial condition and operating performance of the company.

I state this fact because I for one initially thought it very cumbersome to look at every single data which is actually not necessary. Just the relevant data required to determine certain decisions or questions is what is needed.

I am still trying my hands on this new insight and hopeful to gain a lot and achieve more from this course.

            Wish me strength.

I have enjoyed every bit of management communication class, as it continues to open my eyes to something new. There is no denying that the English language is the mode of communication in this part of town, hence the need to be highly sound in communicating the language, whether it is in oral or written form.

One may assume to know the English language, after all it is Nigeria's lingua franca. The truth is that we still find ourselves making several mistakes ranging from the use of contractions in formal letters, to the wrong use of punctuations.

The only way one can get out of this, is to make a conscious effort and continue to practice, especially where you will have to be writing business letters. A business letter can be used to inform, persuade and recommend. The questions need be asked, what is this letter for? , why? What Information is been communicated?

It is important to start with a hook, so as to catch the attention of the reader, likewise the effective construction of the body of the business letter.

From me, it is love and light always.

                  Anyone in the world

Sally is in a bus with a crying man.

“Dem wait make I commot house before dem come so?” he says.

“Aaaah! A whole me? Blood must flow o. “Dem nor know who I be. Blood

                  must flow” he vows…

In the quiet of the previous night, a woman was roused from sleep by heavy thuds crashing against the ground, near the window of her room.

Her eyes fully opened when the sound didn’t stop. Dread washed through her at the realization of what was happening. She hauled herself to the edge of the bed, felt around in the darkness for a gown and threw it over head. She hurried to the other room, taking a dimmed lantern from the passage along with her.

Snoring away, was a boy. He was 5 maybe 6. Legs sprawled apart, spittle had escaped his mouth and travelled down his neck.

“Onos! Wake up” shaking him so hard, his head shook continuously. Knowing he would cry out, she put her hand over his mouth. Seeing his mother’s bulging eyes, with one finger on her lips, he knew to keep quiet. He itched his eyes with his hands, while his mother carried him out of the room.

Someone rapped continuously on the main door, followed by loud kicks on it.

“Oghene! I tell this man make e nor go meet police e no hear” she grumbled amidst quiet tears, taking her son back to his room. A quick look around, she pulled out a big ghana-must-go bag from under the bed, emptied its content on the floor and told Onos to get in.

“No matter what no come outside till I come back you hear?” Onos nodded.

She stuffed the remaining part of the bag quickly and zipped it, leaving only enough space to ensure her son didn’t run out of air.

The door yielded eventually. Four of them came in wearing masks.

“My husband nor dey.” She said immediately, kneeling, pleading and crying.

“Shut up! Who ask you?” said one of them

“We know sey e no dey”

“Shebi e get mouth to tell police sey we dey do bunkering? We go use you leave message for am” said another. Landing a slap across her face…

By morning, just before he boards the bus that will take him back to Warri, he receives a call from his neighbour. He learns that his house had been visited by unknown men, leaving his wife unconscious with knife marks all over her body.

“What of my pikin?” he asks. The neighbour pretends not to hear.

“Na that jungle for back dem from come abi?” he says, not really asking. “Dem go see something”. He hangs up.

“See this idiot o. Wetin you go fit do?” says his neighbour, after the call.

Wearing a content smile on his face, the neighbour recalls how eventful his night was: every thrust he jammed into her - even when a small form was found sneaking at the passage, how they sat the little boy down to watch as another man took his mother, as they made incisions all over his mother’s body and how he overcame the temptation to slit the little boy’s throat afterwards but instead, settled for holding a knife with the little boy’s hand to make more marks on her body.

Sally wonders what to say to a crying man.

“Bros sorry o, take am easy. God go punish them” Sally says.

“Aaaaarrgh! Dem go see. Dem must see something.” He snaps his finger to seal his promise, then pulls his tee-shirt to his eyes to wipe his tears again.

Data they say is the lifeblood of a business. It is with data that decisions are based upon. Good data yields good decisions while the same goes for bad data.

                    Before decision making, however, this data must be put in forms that aid decision-making. Some terms related to this arrangement of data for decision making are;

                    1. Forecasting: This often makes use of historical data or time-series data to extrapolate the future outcomes
                    2. Projecting: The is also a means of laying out the expectation for the future based on assumptions
                    3. Prediction - When forecasting is done within a time frame, this is often referred to as Prediction
                    4. Backcasting - This is similar to prediction, however, this is done at the period before the timeframe
                    5. Nowcasting - This is a Prediction done with 24 hours. For example, 2 hours interval, 1-hour interval, etc

It is also important to note the forecasting is dynamic as data is always changing.
