Anyone in the world

If I had been informed before we started Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE), I would have been distracted all through the exam. About a week to the end of the SSCE exam, my Dede Lagos sent a message that he will come to take me to Lagos two days after the exams.

It is practically impossible to express to you how I felt. Lagos? Destination Nigeria? From that day my “travelling bag” was ready. The clothes I was now wearing/using are those that will not make the journey with me. Everyone in town needs to hear and know that I will be travelling to Lagos. Each day suddenly became 48 hours. You can only imagine it. It was the longest week of my life!

A night to our departure, I knew no sleep. I was awake all through the night. Sleep joyfully eluded me. When nature dared to make the “mistake” of luring me to sleep, I suddenly wake up, checked my bag to make sure it was still there, checked the time.... Wow, it was still 11:30pm! It was the longest night of my life.

As early as 3am, I had taken my bath, dressed up and was just waiting. By 5am, I went to wake my uncle and he told me to go back to sleep (without noticing that I was already ready); that we will be leaving the house by 8am. Just imagine how I felt. But it finally came … and today, it is a story – A Night Before Lagos.

I do not know if you have had such an experience before. It could be a night before any of those ‘special’ occasions in your life. A night before your wedding, your first job, NYSC, travelling abroad, your first flight. I wouldn’t know which was your night and how you felt.

The joy to go to Lagos was because of all the stories we have heard about Lagos. All the bridges, National Theater, Bar Beach, National Stadium, etc. Lagos?

Like my uncle Dede Lagos, Uncle Jesus has informed us that He will come to take us. He told us that He was going to prepare a place for us so that where I am, you will also be. Apostle Paul categorically told us that … eyes have not seen, ears have not heard, neither had it entered the heart of any man, what God has prepared for those who love Him. What do you think/do about this promise of God that He will take us to Heaven? Are you awake, keeping vigil for this journey? Is your bag ready? Do you check on it to make sure it is intact?

I did not tell you that I was chosen by my uncle for the Lagos treat because I was a local ‘family’ champion. It was a reward, sort of. But we were not informed beforehand. Maybe I could have had other people competing for it with me.

But Uncle Jesus has clearly told us the criteria for the heavenly treat. Be holy as your heavenly Father is holy. This is sanctity, which must be sort in every situation/occupation. Whatsoever you do the least of my brother, that you do unto Me. Apostolate. We must reach out to others. And like Fr. Jesus Urteaga wrote in his Letters to Mankind, … an apostolate that consisted in speaking to men about God with the example of their our lives and with words of the sincerest friendship.
