Electronic mail is a method of exchanging messages between people using electronic devices.

Although e-mail can be great, it can also be a huge time consumer. It is important to manage the time you spend on emails properly.

A few reminders:

  • Don’t send an e-mail message if a telephone call would be just as good.
  • Don’t send copies of e-mails to people who don’t need to receive them.
  • Try to cover only one topic in your e-mail.
  • Do provide a descriptive subject line.
  • Keep lines, paragraphs, and messages short.
  • Don’t automatically include the sender’s message.
  • Don’t automatically CC your messages to a large distribution list.
  • Do care about correctness. You are still judged by your writing.
  • Do remember that e-mail is far from private, so if the issue is sensitive, perhaps e-mail isn’t the best medium to use.
  • Don’t use acronyms or shorthand; they’re too informal for business writing. How would you feel if you got a message that looked like, “LWKMD; I was ROTFL at your msg!”

Anyone in the world

Chances are that whatever your station in life or gender is, you have had to negotiate your way out of one unfavourable situation or the other. If for some unlikely reason you haven’t, I assure you that this is one test of wits you cannot escape as long as you are a living being.

So, how does one meander one’s way out of sticky situations?

Well, I would be lying if I told you I had a quick fix, one-size-fits-all answer😁But there are principles I have applied personally which have worked for me – whether at work or at home.

One principle I know does not work is arguing because then, chances are that there would be a clash of egos and if only to ‘save face’ at that moment, your counter party may not agree with you and do your bidding.

So I seek first to understand the person’s view by putting myself in his or her shoes. I even ask hypothetical questions/paint scenarios that reflect his/her thinking. Then, because there are always at least two sides to a story, I also present the alternative scenario to get the person to wear my own shoes and understand my perspective.

Does it always work? Well many times, the counter party at least listens and considers my view point. Will s/he do my bidding? Sometimes but not always. But at least we can converse like adults and take an informed rather than a pure egoistic decision. Of course sometimes too, after considering my counter party’s view, I also shift ground from mine.

You see, this life is give and take. Ultimately, bear in mind that you can’t avoid negotiating your way through life also noting that you would always lose 100% of the chances that you do not take.

Cheers.

Best,

Adefolake

When we started the examination last week , it was as if the examination will not come and go , it will end tomorrow with the Analysis of business problem. I really appreciate all I learnt in this short period , I never knew that we can cover all we have .The online examination has some shortcomings especially the internet instability. In this part of the world that most of what we have are not reliable , the internet is one of these elements that make life beautiful but not available, I even heard some of my course mates getting up to three different network incase there is failure and they don't want to be stranded . My experience on the day we did Corporate Financial Accounting was not palatable at all.
The level of my preparation for CFA was very high but the internet frustrated my efforts , I can't complain because we were told to do all we can to get very good and stable internet . My first 30 minutes was horrible but at the end of the day, I have to find ways around it . Truly, I am enjoying my program.

Gravity Payments: $70,000 Minimum Salary Company business case was written by Won-Yong Oh and Youngkyun Chang for class discussion. This is my best case in Analysis of Business Problem. The decision of the young chief executive officer(CEO) and founder of Gravity Payments Dan Price to set a new minimum salary at $70,000 annually was controversial.

I recall the various names Price was called in class. Some saw him as thoughtless, careless, irrational, Activist and it continues... However I saw a man with a good heart. He stated that increasing salary “It was the right thing to do, I want everybody that partnered with at Gravity to really live the fullest. Best life that they can...I think that’s (the Income level) where you can start to check off those life goal boxes-savings for college, buying a home, some of the basics, starting a family. I want everyone to have those basic opportunities.”

He gave up his salary, used 75% of revenue to pay staff salary.

4Any other businessman would have rejected this increase, Mr. Dan Price ensured that announced minimum age salary was maintained. His objective was quite unusual, and he also got unusual productivity from his employees. Their loyalty to the company became very strong. A company that was predicted would fail is still standing strong.

We need more of Dan Price in the world and in Nigeria.

On the 4th of January or was it the 8th, my Executive MBA journey started with a week of introductory classes aimed at equipping students for what lay ahead. I was just starting but was already looking ahead to graduation which wasn’t on the horizon till late 2022.  I could not tell if what I felt in the pit of my stomach was excitement or trepidation considering how long I have been away from a formal class setting; I was not sure how I would adjust. Would work related pressure give me any chance at all at succeeding at this? All unknowns!

Fast forward four months and three exams later; though the programme has been all shades of challenging for different reasons, it has been a worthwhile experience.

Second semester, here we come...

I have always tried to keep fit though its not an easy venture but one has to be committed to #Baby girl stature for life (if you get one I mean). Anyway, I struggle with dieting because of my love for food but I try to get in at least 3omins workout every day.

My easiest workout session is Jumping rope (Skipping), this kept me through the COVID lockdown. It is super-convenient, easy, and effective home exercises.

Skipping is  great for overall fitness, whether it’s part of a warm up or included in the main workouts.  However aside from fitness It has huge benefits ranging from weight loss, Mental health boost, decrease of belly fat (very important), to strengthening of bones.

 Skipping and Weight Loss:

Jumping rope is a total body workout, it activates all the muscles of your body. Studies have shown that skipping is a great calorie burner, the more you work out, the more calories you burn losing more weight. The level of your weight loss is dependent on the intensity of your skipping. However, intensity should be built gradually, if you are  a beginner, you can start with low-intensity skipping and as time passes you can enhance your intensity as you want.

The beautiful point of skipping is that, it is cheap and does not need any special equipment aside your rope. Combining skipping with healthy diet is a sure way to your weight

However aside from fitness and weight management benefit, skipping is good fun which is an essential factor for any exercise.

One of the major things learnt in ABP (Analyzing Business Problems) class is to develop critical thinking skills, to be able to analyze business problems and take the best decision among other alternatives.

Decision-making involves the selection of a course of action from among two or more possible alternatives in order to arrive at a solution for a given problem.

Managers take hundreds of decisions consciously or subconsciously, making it as a key component in the role of a manager. Decision taking determines both organizational and managerial activities.

The following are steps to be taken in ensuring good decisions are made

  • Step 1: Define the Problem
  • Step 2: Gather relevant information.
  • Step 3: Identify the alternatives.
  • Step 4: Weigh the alternatives.
  • Step 5: Choose among alternatives.
  • Step 6: Take action.
  • Step 7: Monitoring and feedback

I suppose by now, we’ve all come to terms with the fact that in this life, we cannot avoid interacting with people – both the pleasant and the boorish. That being the case, we may also have realised that just as with work, we require skills to navigate the uncertain waters of human relations.

That’s where possessing emotional intelligence comes in.

To my mind, emotional intelligence is just a fancy word for wisdom and we may have heard that wisdom is key right? Emotional intelligence is what enables us to season our words with grace or diplomacy before speaking them. It also enables us to know when to be assertive and firm. Sort of like knowing the right dosage of medication to apply to the same illness in different persons taking cognisance of their body mass and peculiar genetic situations…a real science in’it? What you say to Mr. X to get him to do your bidding is not necessarily what you say to Ms. Y to get her to do your bidding on that same thing. That’s why we all need emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence requires an awareness of self and an awareness of one’s environment (including the people in it) amongst others.

You see ehn, you do not conquer everything in this life only by book knowledge and the fact that you are the most educated person. There are softer skills everyone needs to triumph in life and emotional intelligence happens to be one of them.

Now you see why wisdom is key ergo emotional intelligence is ‘lit.’

So, if lacking, go get you some.

Cheers,

Adefolake
